“…bless the documentary impulse and may truth always have a voice”– Aaron Storry
It’s like déjà vu, another year on and I’m blogging again after being nominated for the annual Rangefinder 30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography competition. It’s a privilege to be considered and a huge achievement. I was asked to submit 30 pictures that represent my abilities as a wedding photojournalist (below is what I put forward).
At the time of writing this (September 2017), 14 of my chosen 30 images have won international awards – that should give you an idea on how high the standard is.
Like last year I didn’t make the final 30 but unlike then I’m much more at ease with it all. The previous 2016 feedback I received is that my work was “polished, even commercial looking” but also that some of it feels “dated and old school”.. I disagree, I didn’t think my work was old fashioned – I’ll let you be the judge.
In a way it’s been a helpful and important milestone in my creative journey; the process of learning that I shouldn’t necessarily hold curators views as a thing to be regarded as ultimate or utmost. I’m less distracted and more in tune than ever in producing moment driven wedding photography with legitimacy which will stand the test of time. I’m very proud that my photography doesn’t rely on romantic editing or ‘of the moment’ techniques to enhance it’s purpose/meaning and I’ll continue to push forward and focus on my craft – finding new ways to innovate and create. Not dwelling too much on the past through nostalgic values or with my head so far into the future, but doing my best to stay present and in the moment – with the resources that are available to me now.
Thanks for Rangefinder for taking the time to look through my collection – it’s always appreciated.
